What Is Ombré?

Ombré — from the French word meaning “shaded” — is a colour technique that creates a gradual transition from one colour (typically darker) at the root to another (typically lighter) at the ends. Unlike balayage, which aims for a natural, blended, sun-kissed look, ombré tends to have a more defined transition point and a more dramatic contrast between root and tip.

Modern ombré can be subtle or striking, warm or cool, natural or vivid — the technique is endlessly versatile.

Ombré vs Balayage — Which Is Right for You?

Choose ombré if you want: a more dramatic, defined gradient with higher contrast between root and tip.

Choose balayage if you want: a softer, more natural, seamlessly blended result with less defined lines.

Choose a combination (sometimes called “sombré”) for the best of both: a graduated colour that’s dramatic enough to be impactful but soft enough to grow out gracefully.

The Ombré Process at Iron + Ivy

Ombré requires careful sectioning, precise bleach placement, and expert toning to achieve a smooth, seamless result without unwanted patchiness or harsh lines. It’s a skill-intensive service — our artists use Olaplex throughout to maintain hair health during the lightening process.
