Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

We love a good question. Here are the answers to the things our clients ask us most — from the basics to the specifics. If your question isn’t here, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.

General Questions

Where is Iron + Ivy Hair Studio located?
We’re located at Shop D1-02A/19 Grant Road, Central Shopping Centre, Queenstown 9300 — right in the heart of Queenstown Central.

Do I need to be a regular client to book?
Not at all. We welcome new clients warmly. Please note that new clients booking colour services are required to complete an in-person consultation at least 48 hours before their appointment.

Colour Services

What’s the difference between balayage and foils?
Balayage is a freehand hand-painting technique that creates a soft, natural, blended result — ideal for a sun-kissed, lived-in look. Foils use sections of hair wrapped in foil with lightener for a brighter, more uniform, higher-contrast result. Many clients combine both techniques. Our artists will recommend the best approach for your hair and goals at consultation.

How long does balayage last?
Balayage grows out beautifully — that’s part of its appeal. Most clients return every 3–5 months for a toner refresh or partial balayage touch-up, rather than the 6–8 week cycle of traditional roots.

What is colour correction and how long does it take?
Colour correction is the process of fixing unwanted, uneven, or damaged colour results — from box dye removal to correcting brassy tones or fixing a previous salon experience. Complexity varies enormously, and some corrections require multiple sessions. We assess every colour correction individually at consultation before quoting time or price.

Do you do colour for new clients?
Yes — with a consultation first. All new clients booking colour services at Iron + Ivy are required to book a complimentary in-person consultation at least 48 hours before their appointment. We conduct a skin test and strand test at this stage.

Why do you require a booking fee for new colour clients?
Our booking fee policy exists to protect our team’s time and ensure we can deliver the best possible service to every client. Colour appointments — especially balayage and large lightening services — require significant preparation and cannot easily be filled at short notice. The booking fee (from $100 for standard colour, $200 for balayage and large lightening) is non-refundable but can be used towards retail products if you change your mind.

Can you fix hair that’s been damaged or coloured badly elsewhere?
Yes — our team specialises in colour correction. Book a consultation and we’ll assess your hair honestly and build a realistic plan. We’ll never tell you something is possible when it isn’t.

Hair Extensions

What hair extension methods do you offer?
We offer K-Tip (keratin bond) extensions and Volume Weft (beaded weft) extensions, applied using premium hair from Bellami and Great Lengths. We do not offer tape-in or I-Tip extensions.

What’s the difference between Bellami and Great Lengths?
Both are world-leading extension brands using 100% human Remy hair. Great Lengths is distinguished by its unique Cold Fusion ultrasonic application technology and its industry-leading ethical sourcing documentation. Bellami offers an exceptional range of 46 shades in multiple gradient patterns. Both brands deliver outstanding results — your artist will discuss which is best for your hair at consultation.

How long do hair extensions last?
With proper aftercare, K-Tip and Volume Weft extensions typically last 3–4 months before a maintenance appointment is required. The hair itself can often be reapplied once or twice, extending the life of your investment.

How much do hair extensions cost?
Extension pricing varies significantly depending on the method, the brand of hair used, the number of strands or wefts required, and your desired result. We provide a full quote at your consultation before any booking is made.

Will hair extensions damage my natural hair?
When applied correctly by certified professionals using quality products, extensions should not damage your natural hair. Damage occurs when extensions are applied incorrectly, maintained poorly, or removed improperly. Our certified team follows best-practice application and removal protocols. We’ll also be honest with you if your natural hair is not in a suitable condition for extensions at the time of consultation.

Treatments

What is Olaplex and do I need it?
Olaplex is a patented bond-building treatment that works at a molecular level to repair broken hair bonds caused by chemical services. If you have colour-treated, lightened, or chemically processed hair, adding Olaplex to your service (or booking it as a standalone treatment) is one of the best investments you can make in your hair’s health. We recommend it to almost all colour clients.

What’s the difference between the Cezanne, Aura, and BKT Nano-Plasty treatments?
Cezanne is a formaldehyde-free keratin treatment that reduces frizz and improves shine while keeping some natural movement. Aura is gentler and targets frizz without straightening the hair. BKT Nano-Plasty is the most powerful option — it reconstructs the hair internally for a significantly straighter, smoother, longer-lasting result. Your artist will recommend the right option for your hair type and goals.

Visiting Queenstown

I’m visiting Queenstown — can I still book?
Absolutely. We love welcoming visitors. See our Visiting Queenstown page for full details on what services are available without a consultation, and tips on planning your appointment around your trip.

How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking as early as possible — especially during peak ski season (July–September) and summer (December–February) when availability fills up quickly. Online booking is open up to three months in advance.
