You’ve invested in beautiful blonde hair — and then a few weeks later it’s looking warm, orange, or yellow. Sound familiar? Brassiness is the number one frustration among blonde clients, and it’s one of the most misunderstood aspects of hair colour. Here’s the truth about why it happens and, more importantly, how to prevent it.
What Causes Brassiness?
When hair is lightened, the natural pigments in your hair are lifted in a particular order: black and dark brown first, then red, then orange, then yellow, then pale yellow. To achieve a true blonde, your colourist needs to lift the hair past those warm, orange tones.
Brassiness occurs when either the hair isn’t lifted sufficiently to begin with, or when the toner applied to neutralise those warm tones fades over time. Toner is not permanent — it sits on the outside of the hair shaft and washes away with every shampoo, gradually allowing the underlying warmth to resurface.
Why NZ Conditions Make It Worse
New Zealand’s environment is particularly tough on blonde hair. Our high UV index — among the highest in the world — actively oxidises hair colour, accelerating the fade of toner and intensifying warm, brassy tones. Chlorine from pools, salt water from Queenstown’s lakes, and even our harder water in some areas can all contribute to faster colour shift.
For Queenstown clients especially, who often enjoy outdoor activities on the water and in the mountains, sun protection for your hair is not optional — it’s essential.
How to Prevent Brassiness
Purple or blue shampoo: Colour-depositing shampoos and conditioners work by depositing cool, violet pigment onto the hair shaft to counteract warm tones. Used once or twice a week (not every wash), they’re one of the most effective tools for maintaining blonde at home. Ask your stylist which product is right for your specific shade.
UV protection products: Leave-in sprays and conditioners with UV filters protect your colour from sun oxidation. In New Zealand’s conditions, these are non-negotiable for blondes.
Regular toning appointments: A toning service between full colour appointments — often called a “toner refresh” — can dramatically extend the life of your blonde. Ask us about scheduling these into your maintenance plan.
Minimise heat without protection: Heat tools can also oxidise colour and strip toner faster. Always use a heat protectant spray before any hot tools.
When to See Your Colourist
If your blonde has already shifted to a warm or orange tone, home products can help manage it but won’t fully correct it. A professional toning service at Iron + Ivy will restore your blonde to its intended shade — and your colourist can advise on the best maintenance routine to keep it there longer.
The best blonde hair starts with the right technique and continues with the right care. We’re here to help with both.
