A great blow wave lasts three to four days when it’s built right and protected at home — the secret is a clean, volumised base, a proper cool-set to lock the shape, and keeping your hands (and humidity) out of it. Here’s how we create that soft, swishy volume at Iron + Ivy, and how to make it go the distance in the Queenstown climate.

It starts before the dryer

Big hair is built on a clean, prepped base. We shampoo with a volumising or lightweight cleanser so the hair has something to hold onto — heavy residue is the enemy of lift. A root-lifting spray or mousse goes in damp, then we rough-dry to about 80% before a brush ever touches the hair. Setting wet hair on a round brush just steams the volume out.

The set is where the bounce comes from

Working in clean sections, we lift each piece up and over a round brush, directing the root up for height and rolling the ends under for that rounded, salon finish. A blast of heat to shape, then — and this is the step almost everyone skips at home — we hit each section with the cool shot and let it fully cool on the brush. Hair sets in the shape it cools in. Skip the cool-down and the bounce drops by lunchtime.

Make it last past day one

  • Let it cool completely before you tie it up, clip it, or head out the door.
  • Hands off. Every touch transfers oil and drops the volume.
  • A light hairspray (not a crunchy one) buys staying power — worth an extra spritz on a windy Queenstown day.
  • Sleep smart: loosely pin the crown into a “pineapple” on top of your head, or use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction.

Reviving it on day two and three

A few minutes with a curling iron or heated rollers through the mid-lengths brings the movement straight back. At the roots, a quick mist of dry shampoo absorbs oil and re-lifts the volume — that alone can buy you an extra full day. With a little effort you’ll comfortably get three to four good days from one professional blow wave.

The Queenstown factor

Our dry alpine air is actually kind to a blow wave — far less frizz than a humid climate. The trade-off is wind and sudden weather. On a big day (a wedding, an event, a lakeside shoot) build in a little extra hold and carry a travel dry shampoo. If you’re heading up the mountain after, a loose low bun protects the shape under a beanie.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a professional blow wave last?

With a proper cool-set and good home care, three to four days is realistic. Fine hair may hold for two to three days; thicker hair often goes longer.

How do I keep my blow wave overnight?

Make sure it’s fully cool before bed, loosely pin the crown up into a “pineapple,” and use a silk or satin pillowcase to cut friction. Refresh the roots with dry shampoo in the morning.

What products help a blow wave last longer?

A volumising prep on damp hair, a flexible-hold hairspray, and a good dry shampoo for refreshing. We’ll recommend the right ones for your hair at your appointment.

Can I book just a blow wave?

Absolutely — a blow wave is a lovely treat on its own, and a great pick before an event. See our blow dry service or book online.
