Queenstown’s alpine winters are spectacular — but they’re not always kind to hair. Cold temperatures, dry air, woollen hats, and static electricity combine to create a challenging environment for hair extensions. Here’s what you need to know about wearing extensions in Queenstown’s winter, and which methods work best.

The Challenges of Winter Extensions

Cold, dry air draws moisture from extension hair, leading to dryness and increased frizz. Static is a particular nuisance in winter — especially when wearing hats and scarves. The repetitive on-and-off motion of beanies and helmets can also cause friction that leads to tangling at the roots of extensions.

None of this is reason to skip extensions in winter — in fact, many of our clients love having extensions during ski season for the extra length and glamour. It just requires a slightly adjusted approach to care.

Which Extension Method Is Best for Winter?

Tape-in extensions tend to perform particularly well in winter because they sit very flat and are unlikely to snag on hats or scarves. Nano ring extensions are also excellent for winter wear. Avoid any extensions with a large or raised attachment point that can catch on clothing or headwear.

Winter Extension Care Tips

Hydration is everything. Use a moisturising leave-in conditioner or light hair oil daily — focusing on the mid-lengths and ends — to combat the drying effects of cold air and indoor heating. Before putting on a ski helmet or beanie, braid your hair loosely or tuck it into a low plait to minimise friction and tangling.

After skiing, rinse your hair if it’s been exposed to salt, sweat, or heavy moisture, and detangle while slightly damp using a gentle brush from ends to roots.
