Queenstown’s Balayage Specialists
At Iron + Ivy Hair Studio, balayage is more than a technique — it’s our craft. As Queenstown’s highest-rated salon and home to award-winning colour artists, we’ve built our reputation on delivering balayage that looks effortlessly natural, beautifully dimensional, and completely bespoke to you.
Whether you’re after soft, sun-kissed warmth or a bold, high-contrast result, our team has the skill, the eye, and the international training to make it happen.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a French hand-painting technique where colour is swept through the hair freehand — rather than using foils — to create a soft, blended, graduated result. The word itself means “to sweep” in French, and that’s exactly what it looks like: natural colour movement that mimics the way the sun naturally lightens hair.
Unlike traditional foil highlights, balayage grows out gracefully with no harsh regrowth lines, making it a lower-maintenance colour option that still delivers stunning results.
Balayage is ideal for:
• Adding warmth, dimension, and depth to natural colour
• Achieving a natural, sun-kissed blonde look
• Building towards a lighter colour gradually and healthily
• Low-maintenance colour that suits a busy lifestyle
Why Choose Iron + Ivy for Your Balayage?
Balayage is a skill-dependent technique. The result lives or dies on the artist’s ability to read your hair, understand your face shape, and hand-paint with precision. At Iron + Ivy, our colour artists are internationally trained, award-winning professionals who have refined this craft across thousands of heads of hair.
Led by Creative Director Lauren McMurray-Sherwin — an internationally recognised stylist and award-winner — our team approaches every balayage service as a bespoke piece of work. No two results look the same, because no two clients are the same.
We also only use the world’s leading colour and care products — including Olaplex bond-building treatments throughout your service — to ensure your hair’s health is protected at every stage.
Our Balayage Process
Consultation First
All new clients at Iron + Ivy are required to book a complimentary in-person consultation at least 48 hours before their appointment. This isn’t a formality — it’s where the real work begins. We assess your hair’s condition, discuss your goals, look at reference images together, and build a personalised plan. We also conduct a skin test and strand test at this stage.
The Application
On appointment day, your artist will section and hand-paint your colour with precision, blending seamlessly from root to tip. Depending on your starting point and goal, we may use a combination of techniques including balayage, toning, and Olaplex treatments to achieve the perfect result.
The Finish
All colour services at Iron + Ivy are finished with a cut and blow dry style, so you leave the salon looking and feeling your absolute best.
Balayage Pricing
Balayage pricing starts from $181 and varies depending on your artist level, hair length, and the complexity of your desired result. A full breakdown of our pricing by artist is available on our Services page.
Please note: a non-refundable booking fee of $200 is required to secure balayage and large lightening appointments for new clients.
Frequently Asked Questions About Balayage
How long does balayage take?
Balayage appointments typically take 2.5 to 4+ hours depending on hair length, density, and complexity. Your consultation will give you a more accurate time estimate.
How often do I need to touch up my balayage?
One of balayage’s biggest advantages is its low maintenance. Most clients return every 3–5 months for a refresh or toner, rather than the 6–8 week cycle of traditional roots.
Can balayage be done on dark hair?
Absolutely. Dark hair balayage requires a skilled lifting process and often multiple sessions to achieve your goal colour safely. Our team specialises in this and will be honest with you at consultation about what’s achievable in one visit.
Is balayage damaging?
When performed by trained professionals using quality products, balayage is one of the gentler lightening services. We use Olaplex throughout all lightening services to protect and rebuild the hair bond.

Booking balayage with Iron + Ivy is more than booking a colour service — it’s a fully bespoke experience designed around your hair, your lifestyle, and the look you want to live in.
Every balayage appointment begins with a personalised consultation. Your artist will take time to understand your hair history, look at your inspiration photos, assess your hair’s condition, and talk through tone, contrast, placement, and maintenance. We’d rather slow down at the start than rush a colour decision you’ll live with for months.
The painting itself takes time — true freehand balayage cannot be rushed. Depending on your hair length, density, and the level of lift required, a balayage appointment with us typically runs between three and five hours. We use a blend of hand-painting, optional Olaplex bond protection, and toning to deliver soft, dimensional colour that’s kind to your hair.
You’ll leave with a finished blow-dry, a clear maintenance plan, your home-care recommendations, and a booking guide for your next visit. Most clients return every twelve to sixteen weeks, which is one of the things that makes balayage such a popular choice for busy lifestyles.
Balayage is one of the most versatile colour services we offer, but it’s not the right fit for every hair type or every goal. Here’s how we think about it.
Balayage works beautifully for clients with mid-to-dark blonde, brunette, or warm-base hair who want a soft, sun-kissed lift; anyone wanting low-maintenance colour with twelve-to-sixteen-week regrowth windows; clients with healthy hair that can take lightener; and anyone wanting to grow their colour out gracefully without harsh lines.
Balayage works well alongside a fresh cut or restyle, Olaplex or K20 bond-repair treatments to protect hair through the lightening process, and a glossing toner refresh between full balayage appointments to keep tones soft and brassiness at bay.
Balayage may not be the right starting point if you’re going from a box-dye base and need correction work first, you want bright platinum or icy results across the whole head (foils may suit you better), or your hair is significantly compromised and needs a treatment plan before any lightener is applied. In any of these cases, our team will recommend a consultation and a tailored pathway to get you to your goal safely.
How much does balayage cost at Iron + Ivy?
Balayage with our Artists starts at $181 and ranges up to $218 with our Creative Director. The final price depends on hair length, density, and the level of lift required — your consultation will confirm the exact investment before we begin. We recommend adding an Olaplex Bonding Treatment ($49) to protect your hair through the lightening process.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
Most balayage appointments run between three and five hours, including consultation, painting, processing, toning, and a finished blow-dry. We don’t rush — quality balayage is a slow craft.
How often will I need to come back?
Most balayage clients return every twelve to sixteen weeks. That’s one of the reasons balayage is so popular for busy lifestyles — it grows out softly rather than leaving a harsh regrowth line.
Will balayage damage my hair?
Balayage uses lightener to lift colour, so some care is required. We protect your hair with optional Olaplex or K20 bond-repair treatments during the service and recommend a home-care plan with quality shampoo, conditioner, and weekly masks to keep your colour and condition at their best.
Can I get balayage on dark or previously coloured hair?
In most cases, yes — but it depends on your hair history and condition. If you have a box-dye base or significant build-up, we may recommend a colour-correction pathway first. A consultation will give you a clear, honest answer.
Should I book balayage with a cut?
Many clients book a Ladies Cut + Finish alongside their balayage. A fresh shape helps the colour fall beautifully and is the most cost-effective way to refresh both at once.
