Hair extensions are one of those services where the quality of the salon matters enormously. A poorly applied set of extensions can damage your natural hair, look unnatural, and cost you more to fix than the original application. Which is exactly why more and more Australians visiting Queenstown are using their trip as an opportunity to finally get their extensions done — properly, by people who do nothing but this at the highest level.
Why Iron + Ivy for Extensions?
Iron + Ivy is Queenstown’s only salon certified in multiple premium extension methods. We’re not a general hair salon that also happens to do extensions on the side — extensions are a core specialty, and our team trains continuously to stay at the leading edge of application technique and hair care best practice.
We work with four premium methods:
Great Lengths
Great Lengths is widely regarded as the gold standard in hair extensions globally. Made from 100% ethically sourced human hair and bonded with a patented keratin-based adhesive, Great Lengths extensions are renowned for their longevity and natural appearance. Iron + Ivy are certified Great Lengths specialists — one of very few salons in the South Island of New Zealand to hold this certification.
Bellami Hair Extensions
Bellami is the extension brand of choice for many of the world’s leading hair professionals and celebrity stylists. Their tape-in and weft extensions deliver exceptional volume and length and are particularly well-suited to Australian hair types, which tend to be on the finer to medium side.
K-Tip (Keratin Tip) Extensions
K-tip extensions are applied strand by strand using a keratin bond, giving your stylist precise control over placement and creating a highly natural result. Ideal for clients who want seamless blending and long-lasting wear.
Volume Weft
Volume Weft (also known as hand-tied wefts) is the preferred method for clients who want maximum volume with minimal weight and damage. Applied with beads or tape, Volume Weft is a gentler option that’s particularly popular with clients who have finer or more delicate natural hair.
What to Do Before Your Appointment
All extension clients at Iron + Ivy begin with a consultation. This is non-negotiable and genuinely important — we need to assess your natural hair condition, thickness, and growth pattern before recommending a method and hair selection. Please don’t arrive expecting to go straight into application without a consultation first.
For Australian visitors, we recommend booking your consultation as early in your trip as possible, and ideally on a separate day to your application if your schedule allows. The consultation ensures you leave with exactly the right result for your hair type and lifestyle.
How Long Do Extensions Take?
Application times vary by method and volume:
- Tape-in: 1.5–3 hours
- K-tip: 3–5 hours
- Volume Weft: 2–4 hours
- Great Lengths: 3–6 hours depending on volume
Plan accordingly when you’re booking around your Queenstown itinerary.
Can I Get Extensions Removed or Maintained While Visiting?
Yes. If you currently have extensions applied by another salon and need maintenance, removal, or a re-application while in Queenstown, contact us in advance so we can assess what’s needed and allocate the right amount of time.
Flying Home with New Extensions — What to Know
Fresh extensions travel beautifully. We’ll send you home with aftercare instructions and product recommendations — all of which are available through Moroccanoil retailers across Australia. The key things to remember are: sleep with your hair in a loose braid, use a sulphate-free shampoo, and avoid chlorine until your extensions are fully settled (about 48 hours post-application).
Book Your Queenstown Extension Appointment
Extensions at Iron + Ivy are by appointment only and fill up quickly — especially in summer and ski season. Book online here or email [email protected] with your preferred dates and the method you’re interested in. We’ll come back to you promptly.
