Getting your blonde looking perfect is one thing. Keeping it that way in New Zealand’s unique climate is another. From the intense Otago sun to Queenstown’s mineral-rich water, blonde hair faces some specific challenges here. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your colour looking its best.
Use a Purple Shampoo (But Not Too Often)
Toned blonde hair will naturally warm over time due to oxidation, sun exposure, and mineral deposits in the water. A purple or blue shampoo neutralises these warm, brassy tones by depositing cool pigment. However, overuse can leave hair looking dull or even slightly violet. We recommend using it once or twice a week, or whenever you notice your colour shifting warmer than you’d like.
Invest in a Good Bond-Building Treatment
Bleached hair is more porous than natural hair, meaning it loses moisture faster. Bond-building treatments like Olaplex No.3 (used at home) or K18 (applied in-salon) work at a molecular level to repair the internal structure of your hair. Using one weekly makes a significant difference in how your blonde looks and feels over time.
Protect Against the NZ Sun
New Zealand has some of the highest UV levels in the world, and UV radiation is one of the biggest culprits behind colour fading and hair damage. A UV-protecting hair product — either a spray, cream, or oil — should be a non-negotiable in your summer routine. At Iron + Ivy we stock Moroccanoil’s UV protection range, which we highly recommend.
Avoid Hot Tools Without Heat Protectant
Heat styling accelerates colour fade and dries out bleached hair. Always apply a heat protectant before using a straightener, curling iron, or even a blow dryer. Keep temperatures below 180°C where possible.
Swim Smart
Chlorine and salt water both affect blonde hair — chlorine can turn very light blonde hair slightly green, while salt dehydrates it. Before swimming, wet your hair with fresh water and apply a leave-in conditioner or oil to reduce absorption. After swimming, rinse thoroughly and apply a moisturising treatment.
