There’s nothing quite like leaving the salon with a perfect blow dry — smooth, voluminous, and exactly right. The question most clients ask is: how do I make this last longer than one day? Here are our professional tips for extending your blowout all week.

Start With the Right Products

A blow dry product applied before heat — a heat protectant, a blowout cream, or a volumising mousse — creates the foundation for your style and helps it hold. Ask your stylist what they use during your appointment; often the products used in-salon make a significant difference to the result and its longevity. At Iron + Ivy we’ll always recommend what we used and why.

The Dry Shampoo Strategy

Dry shampoo is your best friend for extending a blow dry. Apply it to the roots on day two or three — before they get oily, not after. Applying dry shampoo to already-oily roots is less effective; applying it when they’re just starting to lose freshness keeps the volume and texture for longer.

Sleep Smart

Sleeping on loose hair destroys blow drys quickly. Instead, loosely twist your hair up into a bun or plait it loosely before bed. A silk or satin pillowcase also reduces friction significantly and preserves the smoothness and texture of your blow dry. In the morning, let the style down and gently re-smooth any areas with a round brush and warm dryer.

Refresh, Don’t Redo

By day three or four, you don’t need to fully redo your blow dry — just refresh it. A light spritz of a styling spray, a quick pass with a round brush and warm dryer at the roots, and you’re done. Spot-treating is faster and gentler on your hair than a full daily wash and style.
