One of the most common questions we hear from extension clients is: “Can I colour my extensions?” The answer is nuanced — it’s possible, but there are important rules and limitations. Here’s what you need to know.
The Short Answer
Yes, you can colour 100% Remy human hair extensions — but only with professional colour, never with box dye, and within certain limitations. Extensions cannot be lightened (bleached) after they’ve been applied, and they behave differently to natural hair during the colouring process. Always have a professional handle extension colouring.
What You Can Do
Darken extensions: Going darker is generally safe and achievable. If your extensions are slightly lighter than your natural colour, they can be toned or darkened to match.
Toning: Toning is an excellent way to adjust the hue of your extensions — taking them cooler, warmer, or more neutral without dramatically changing the shade. This is the most common colour work done on extensions.
Custom matching at installation: The best approach is to have your extensions custom colour-matched before they’re installed. At Iron + Ivy we can work with your supplier to source extensions in the right shade, or we can tone them to match during your installation appointment.
What You Cannot Do (Safely)
Extensions cannot be bleached or lightened once installed. Extension hair has already been chemically processed; applying bleach to it is very likely to cause damage or breakage. If you want lighter extensions, they need to be purchased at the correct shade or pre-lightened by the supplier before installation.
The Best Approach: Talk to Us First
If you’re considering new extensions and you’re not sure about colour matching, come in for a consultation. We’ll assess your hair and recommend the right approach — whether that’s sourcing extensions in your exact shade, toning them in-salon, or blending them with your natural colour.
