How Many Sessions Does It Take to Go Blonde? An Honest Answer

It’s one of the most common questions we hear at Iron + Ivy: “Can I go from dark to blonde in one session?” We’ll always give you an honest answer, even if it’s not the one you were hoping for.

The Short Answer

It depends on how dark your hair is, your target blonde shade, and the current condition of your hair. For most clients going from a natural medium to dark brunette to a true blonde, you’re looking at 2–3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. For very dark or previously coloured hair, 3+ sessions may be needed.

Why Can’t You Always Do It in One Session?

Hair has a natural order of lightening — it moves through underlying warm tones (orange, yellow) on its way to pale blonde. Trying to push through all of those stages in a single appointment would require leaving the bleach on longer than is safe for your hair. The result? Significant damage, potential breakage, and compromised hair integrity.
