What Are Sulphates?
Sulphates (like sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate) are the cleansing agents in most conventional shampoos, they’re what creates that satisfying lather. They’re effective at removing oil, product build-up, and dirt, but they’re also highly effective at stripping colour molecules from the hair shaft.

How Sulphates Affect Colour
Each wash with a sulphate-heavy shampoo opens the hair cuticle and flushes out colour molecules, accelerating fade significantly. This is particularly damaging for lighter colours, blonde, balayage, and any toned shades, where the colour molecules are already less deeply embedded in the hair.
What Is Sulphate-Free Shampoo?
Sulphate-free shampoos use gentler cleansing agents (like cocamidopropyl betaine or sodium cocoyl isethionate) that clean effectively without aggressively stripping the hair. They’re less lathery than traditional shampoos but just as effective at removing everyday dirt and oil.
The Colour-Extending Benefits
Switching to a sulphate-free shampoo after a colour service can extend the life of your colour by weeks, sometimes months. Your toner stays vibrant, your balayage stays bright, and you spend less on colour refreshes over time.
Other Benefits of Going Sulphate-Free
- Reduces scalp irritation and dryness
- Preserves natural oils for healthier hair
- Extends keratin treatment results
- Better for sensitive skin types

Frequently Asked Questions
Does sulphate-free shampoo really make colour last longer?
Yes. Sulphates open the cuticle and lift colour molecules out with each wash. Switching to sulphate-free typically adds two to four weeks to a toner and noticeably slows balayage fading.
Why does sulphate-free shampoo not lather?
Because the foaming agent is the sulphate. Wet hair thoroughly, use a little more product and work it through the scalp with your fingertips. Less lather does not mean less clean.
Can I use sulphate-free shampoo after a keratin or Nanoplasty treatment?
You must. Sulphates and salt strip smoothing treatments in a few washes. Sulphate-free is non-negotiable aftercare for Cezanne and Nanoplasty.
Which sulphate-free shampoo does Iron + Ivy recommend?
It depends on your colour. Moroccanoil Color Extend for blondes and balayage, Olaplex No. 4 for bleached or fragile hair, and the Lakme K20 range after a repair treatment. Ask your artist at the basin; we stock all three.
