If you’re considering hair extensions, you’ve probably already discovered that there are several different types — and choosing between them can feel overwhelming. Two of the most popular options are tape-in extensions and weft (or hand-tied weft) extensions. Here’s what you need to know about each.
Tape-In Extensions
Tape-in extensions consist of thin, pre-taped wefts of hair that sandwich around small sections of your natural hair. They’re applied flat against the head, making them very discreet and comfortable to wear. Tape-ins are one of the most popular extension methods in New Zealand for good reason: they’re versatile, relatively quick to apply (typically 1–2 hours for a full set), and they look incredibly natural when applied correctly.
Pros: Flat and discreet, easy to style, gentle on hair, good for fine to medium thickness, quick application.
Cons: Require re-taping every 6–8 weeks, tape can show if hair is very fine or if parted in a particular way.
Weft (Hand-Tied Weft) Extensions
Weft extensions are long curtains of hair sewn or bonded onto a thin, flexible weft, then attached to your natural hair using small beads or hand-tied thread. They’re applied in rows around the head and create a seamless, natural look. Weft extensions tend to last slightly longer between maintenance appointments (8–10 weeks) and can add more volume than tape-ins.
Pros: Very natural look, excellent for adding both length and volume, longer maintenance intervals.
Cons: More complex application (longer appointment), slightly higher initial cost, require specialist installation.
Which Should You Choose?
The right extension method depends on your hair thickness, lifestyle, budget, and goals. Fine hair clients often do well with tape-ins; those wanting maximum volume might prefer wefts. The best way to decide? Come in for a consultation.
