There’s a particular anxiety that many people feel in the salon chair — the worry that what they’re imagining won’t come out the way they describe it, or that they don’t have the right vocabulary to ask for what they want. Let’s fix that. Here’s how to communicate with your stylist so you both leave the appointment happy.
Bring Photos
This is the single most effective thing you can do. A photo communicates more clearly than a thousand words. The language of hair — “not too short but not too long, kind of layered but still heavy” — is inherently ambiguous. A photo removes the ambiguity. Save two or three images from Instagram, Pinterest, or anywhere else that show the result you’re after.
More photos are better. Showing us three examples of what you want AND one example of what you don’t want gives us a much clearer picture of your vision.
Talk About Your Lifestyle, Not Just Your Look
The best cuts and colours don’t just look good — they work with your life. Tell your stylist how much time you spend on your hair in the morning, whether you use heat tools regularly, whether you exercise and how often, and what your typical day looks like. This context shapes the recommendation significantly.
Be Clear About What You Don’t Want
It can feel impolite to say “I don’t want that” — but it’s one of the most useful pieces of information you can share. If you’ve had a bad experience with a particular length, technique, or colour result, tell us. We’d far rather know upfront than find out afterwards.
Ask Questions During the Appointment
If we explain something you don’t understand, ask. If you’re not sure about a direction, say so. The consultation is a conversation, not a one-way presentation. We want to know what you’re thinking, and no question is ever too basic.
